When you\u2019re designing learning for your business, it can be really hard to know where to begin. Because you don\u2019t just want learning that\u2019s \u201cgood enough,\u201d you want learning that\u2019s right for you, your culture, and your people. Often, this means you want learning that your people can access easily from anywhere (eLearning), and you want learning that will support your people long-term (performance support).<\/span><\/p>\n

To find that perfect balance, let\u2019s take a look at Venn Diagrams. They\u2019re a simple diagram used to help <\/span>understand the similarities and differences between two (or three or four) things<\/span><\/a>. In the Venn Diagram, different options each have their own circle, and the place where those circles overlap is called Reuleaux triangle\u2014where the different options come together to create the optimal solution.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if you see eLearning and performance support as two circles, there\u2019s a near-perfect center where the two overlap (the Reuleaux triangle)\u2014and that\u2019s your optimal learning solution. Before we dig into what optimal solution looks like, let\u2019s take a look at both circles.<\/span><\/p>\n

How eLearning works<\/span><\/h2>\n

We all have a pretty good idea of what eLearning is, and we\u2019ve all experienced it in one form or another. eLearning is learning that is delivered in an electronic format (often online) and is self-paced by the learner. This is a broad definition and has a lot of potential applications. eLearning can range for Youtube videos, <\/span>to Storyline courses<\/span><\/a> or a completely online LMS. To help narrow it down and find the coveted overlap of the Venn Diagram, we\u2019ll have to take a closer look at its neighboring circle, performance support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> performance support?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Performance support is anything that helps you do your job better.<\/span><\/a> It gives you what you need when you need it, and it can come in any form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Performance support can be a physical solution. Take a checklist, for example. If you\u2019re training a new employee at a local deli with sandwich names like \u201cThe Californian\u201d or \u201cHam Extravaganza,\u201d it may take a couple of days (or weeks) before that new employee has committed the full list of sandwich orders to memory. Enter performance support. Keep a simple checklist available behind the counter, listing what ingredients belong on each sandwich. This increases sandwich-making efficiency and accuracy (and decreasing employee stress!).<\/span><\/p>\n

While a checklist is performance support in its most helpful and simplest form, it\u2019s a good example. Because it perfectly fits the definition of performance support: successfully giving the learner what they need when they need it.<\/span><\/p>\n

As technology\u2019s progressed, performance support has begun shifting to primarily electronic support, such as search engines or mobile applications. Today, electronic performance support systems (EPSS) have to follow a few particular characteristics. <\/span>
