From watches to phones to glasses, mobile devices are changing the way we see technology. Increased clarity and power now make it simple to use phones as an effective channel for content distribution, especially in learning and communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do we know when to use mobile for learning? What factors make mobile a good choice? Should your learning project be mobile only, mobile as part of the tool-kit, or not mobile at all?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer? Deciding if your project will be mobile first depends on many factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Current Facts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/technology-media-and-telecommunications\/articles\/global-mobile-consumer-survey-us-edition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a third of adults use their smartphones very often<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for business purposes outside normal working hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty five percent of employees surveyed by Frost &amp; Sullivan say <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.samsung.com\/2016\/08\/03\/employees-say-smartphones-boost-productivity-by-34-percent-frost-sullivan-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobile devices improve the quality of their work<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using mobile devices for work saves people in management positions 58 minutes per day and increases productivity by 34 percent<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These numbers are only going to keep growing. And with that much saved time and increased productivity, it sounds like mobile\u2019s the way to go. But a little caution goes a long way when caught up in the exhilaration of tools and technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 questions to explore when considering mobile learning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before jumping into mobile learning, it\u2019s important to make sure it\u2019s the right choice. What&#8217;s the learning context?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The setting where your mobile learning takes place is just as critical as what you will be learning through mobile. Think about different scenarios and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maestrolearning.com\/blogs\/learning-on-our-own-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how your learners would engage with a mobile learning experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in that context. Will it be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the job training?<\/li>\n<li>New hire onboarding quick references?<\/li>\n<li>Sales support for reps right before they meet with a prospective client?<\/li>\n<li>Or something else entirely?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also keep in mind that some learning contexts just don\u2019t work for mobile devices. For example, if you\u2019re looking at long seat time, complex illustrations, or in-person practicals, the smaller mobile screen just doesn\u2019t give the room you need. Staying sensitive to your learning context helps you create learning that\u2019s best for both you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your learners. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. What are your desired learning results?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to make sure you\u2019re getting the most for your investment when you invest in a mobile approach. So when creating mobile, think through what success looks like for you and your team.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How will you track results?<\/li>\n<li>Analyze data?<\/li>\n<li>Can mobile learning be accessed from computers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider whether mobile learning will stand alone as its own entity or if it will complement an existing learning strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. What&#8217;s the seat-time?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much time will users need to spend on their mobile devices to meet the objectives that having a mobile strategy will bring? If it\u2019s more than a few hours, learning done on a laptop or desktop might be more comfortable than staring at a smaller screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile learning is best for shorter learning chunks of less than fifteen minutes. This helps your learners retain information over a longer period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. How much screen real estate do you need?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the subject matter? Depending on what your learners are studying, they may benefit from different screen sizes. If they\u2019re studying something straightforward, such as proper hand washing, then mobile should work without a problem. But if they\u2019re learning a subject that includes large or complicated visuals, such as anatomy or engineering, then a larger screen might be easier on the eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Is your business ready and willing to embrace change?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of this will be tied to your organizational readiness. This is something that you\u2019ll have to take an honest look at because it means assessing what technology usage looks like at your organization. If the majority of your team already uses mobile devices \u2014 think tablets or smartphones \u2014 adopting mobile learning will be much easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll also need to consider the rather messy topic of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lilachbullock\/2019\/01\/21\/the-future-of-byod-statistics-predictions-and-best-practices-to-prep-for-the-future\/#6e5eb3e1f307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) versus company issued devices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If your employees already use their own devices on the job, keep an eye security and compatibility issues. If your employees don\u2019t use their own devices because of company policy or security concerns, this impacts the flexibility of mobile learning.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After these key areas are considered, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maestrolearning.com\/blogs\/mobile-mindset-6-ways-to-instantly-make-learning-mobile-friendly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determine if mobile is your sole learning tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mobile first) if it supplements another tool, such as a computer or instructor-led training (ILT) or if it\u2019s a blended approach. Either way, developing mobile learning requires careful analysis and exploration to determine your approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mobile as a learning tool<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the initial mobile hype (around 2007 &#8211; 2014), mobile became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the way<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create learning. But now that mobile\u2019s settled into daily life, we\u2019ve grown to see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maestrolearning.com\/blogs\/how-to-successfully-implement-emerging-tech-in-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobile as just one tool in a vast tool-kit of learning technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in most cases, mobile works best as part of a larger learning experience, such as ILT support, formal training extensions, continuous learning, or performance support.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mobile first mindset is outdated.
